December 29, 2004: Bush’s Remarks on Tsunami Disaster Relief (AP)

  • PRESIDENT BUSH: Good morning. Laura and I, and the American people, are shocked and we are saddened by the terrible loss of life from the recent earthquake and the tsunamis in the Indian Ocean. Our prayers go out to the people who’ve lost so much to this series of disasters. Our hearts are also with the Americans who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.
  • It takes money, by the way, to move an expeditionary force into the region. We’re diverting assets, which is part of our overall aid package. We’ll continue to provide assets. Plus the American people will be very generous themselves. I mean, the $2.4 billion was public money, of course provided by the taxpayers.
