  • At the time, Obama said that "there is no reason why telephone companies should be given blanket immunity to cover violations of the rights of the American people."
  • At a June 25 press conference, Obama said that his "view on FISA has always been that the issue of the phone companies per se is not one that overrides the security interests of the American people."
  • "I think if you look at why people were concerned about the original bill it was simply that we wouldn't be able to sue the phone companies," Obama continued. "I would be happier with a system that discloses what's happened and make sure that we prevent violations of the American peoples' privacy even if the phone companies are held harmless."
